NAPOLEON, Ky. -- Interstate 71 southbound in Gallatin County was closed for more than 12 hours Thursday as crews worked to clean up a hazmat spill caused by a crash.
A crash occurred on I-75 southbound near the 69 mile marker, past the Verona exit, at about 2:30 a.m., according to Gallatin County emergency dispatchers. That crashed caused several others.
The road reopened at about 5 p.m.
The hazmat situation is related to a box truck involved in a crash, dispatchers said.
Information about exactly what hazardous materials were involved wasn't immediately available.
Residents in the area said they could smell an unpleasant odor and saw plumes of smoke.
