GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio – The Colerain versus La Salle football series appears to be over.
La Salle Interim Athletic Director Jim Barre told WCPO Wednesday morning both schools are looking for new opponents for Week 1 of the 2019 season.
“We were not planning on looking elsewhere, but the contract was officially denied Monday morning,” Colerain Athletic Director Craig Ulland told WCPO.
Barre said La Salle won't announce a new opponent until a contract is signed with another school.
Colerain defeated visiting La Salle 23-0 Aug. 24 in front of an estimated 6,100 at Cardinal Stadium. The game was part of the 21st annual Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown.
It was the fifth meeting between the two schools since the rivalry resumed in 2014. Colerain leads the all-time series 13-11 but La Salle won three of the five games since 2014.
The game has been a Week 1 staple since 2017 after the Greater Miami Conference went to an eight-game conference schedule.
Colerain (1-0), which plays at St. Xavier (1-0) Friday night, has renewed with St. X for 2019 and 2020. Colerain would need one more non-conference game for next season.
The Colerain-St. X game has been Week 2 since the 2013 season.
La Salle (0-1) plays host to Mason (1-0) this week in the first of a home-and-home series between those schools.
