CINCINNATI — Xavier University’s Big East Conference opener against Providence on Saturday is postponed after a member of the program tested positive for COVID-19, according to Tom Eiser, associate athletic director for communications.

Xavier’s Big East home opener, scheduled for Tuesday against Seton Hall, will also be postponed.

A "Tier 1" member of XU's program tested positive for the virus, according to the team. A Tier 1 member is "the highest exposure tier and consists of individuals for whom physical distancing and face coverings are not possible or effective during athletic training or competition," according to the NCAA.

A Tier 1 member could include student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and physical therapists, medical staff, equipment staff and officials, according to NCAA.

Eiser said Xavier tests Tier 1 members of the men’s basketball team three times a week.

The Big East Conference will announce any further changes to Xavier’s conference schedule once they are finalized, Eiser said. This will include rescheduled dates for postponed games.
