One person is dead, and three people are in "serious" condition following a mass shooting in downtown Ottawa, police said Wednesday.

The Ottawa Police Service said in a statement that they had responded to reports of a shooting at about 7:30 a.m. ET Wednesday. Upon arrival, they found "several" people injured.

One person was confirmed to be dead at the scene. Three others were transported to local hospitals.

Police are searching for a suspect, but added that they do not consider the incident an "active shooter situation."

Ottawa is the capital city of Canada and is located in the province of Ontario.
