COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder says the chamber will pay $616,000 a year to boost the starting pay of legislative aides.

Householder, a Republican from Perry County, said Friday that starting pay will jump to $38,500 from $35,000 retroactive to Jan. 7.

Householder also said all current legislative aides will receive an increase of $3,500 to their salaries, along with administrative aides, pages, constituent aides, and people in other administrative positions.

The speaker says the cost was off-set by staffing changes he put into place since becoming speaker.

Householder said legislative aides and staff in both political parties work hard and are dedicated to improving Ohio and should be compensated fairly.
