MADISONVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Transportation Department is warning drivers to start watching for deer as the animals become more active over the next few months.
A statement from the agency says Kentucky is 15th in the nation for vehicle crashes involving deer. It says most collisions are reported in the months of October, November and December.
Deneatra Henderson is the chief engineer for transportation district 2 and says drivers should use extra caution, especially when driving during twilight hours when deer are most active.
There were 3,200 vehicle collisions in Kentucky last year involving deer and 3,100 the previous year.
Drivers are asked to report all deer-vehicle collisions to police for data collection and monitoring. This allows transportation officials to place signage or take other measures needed to reduce crashes.
