MONTICELLO, Ky. — A large fire destroyed parts of a popular Lake Cumberland resort early Monday but the owner says the marina and houseboat rentals will be open for Memorial Day weekend.
The fire at the Conley Bottom Resort destroyed the store and café, co-owner Freddie Piercy told WKYT. A houseboat used by the marina was damaged.
No rental boats were damaged and boats will be available as usual, Piercy said. The holiday weekend is typically one of the busiest weekends at the lake.
Conley Bottom Resorts also has waterfront lodging, a campground and several restaurants.
"It was just engulfed. I mean it was huge,” houseboat owner Sue Busch said about the fire. "Certain parts, colors were changing. Sometimes it was red, yellow, green. It was horrible.”
"We haven't seen any fuel on the water, but we got the environmental people coming in and taking a look at it," said Jerry Ferrell of the Monticello Fire Department.
The fire started around 2:30 a.m. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
