While many families are usually in need at the beginning of this school year, in the age of COVID-19, more families are in need, but a nonprofit had to rethink the way it helped out.
"There are just a lot more families struggling right now," Paul Gottbrath, president of the board for the nonprofit Northern Kentucky Harvest, said. "They're still trying to exist on unemployment insurance, whatever else they can scrape together. So it's a tough time for them."
For about 20 years, the nonprofit has gathered in Goebel Park in Northern Kentucky for their annual Backpacks and Breakfast event. The group has given away thousands of backpacks filled with school supplies in that time.
In 2020 though, when large gatherings are prohibited and people are told to stay at least six feet apart, the nonprofit had to come up with another way to help out. What they came up with was a raffle.
To enter the raffle, fill out and email the appropriate forms at the end of this article to backpacks@beconcerned.org.
Then, winners will be drawn on Friday. Once the winners are selected, the nonprofit will get in touch with the winners to schedule a time for pickup.
The deadline to enter the raffle is Thursday.
