CINCINNATI — The idea behind the Green Team at Alliance Academy of Cincinnati is twofold: Reduce the carbon footprint of the school locally while increasing the opportunities of its students globally.
Computer technology teacher Mercedes Carr led sixth-graders through the middle school wing of the school Wednesday, the same as she does every Wednesday afternoon, collecting recycling bins outside of classrooms.
She said the students she leads on the Green Team are learning responsible habits throughout the community, and they’re learning skills and concepts fit for the 21st century jobs they’ll be up for in a few years.
“Being on the Green Team gives the students an opportunity to have an internal school job, which provides them with basic job skills such as time management, discipline, responsibility, and much more,” Carr said.
She said students are carefully selected by school staff to help set a positive example for their classmates.
Green Team member Xavier Stewart said he took what he learned at school to improve his own neighborhood.
“I introduced this to my family and that’s when we went around and introduced it to other people,” he said. “So that’s when we picked up trash and start putting it in recycling bins.”
