COVINGTON, Ky. -- Teenagers from Easterseals Youthbuild were hard at work in Covington Friday, helping fix up a home for a veteran who was unable to on his own.
The program helps prepare people for jobs in construction while earning their high school diploma.
Veteran Francisco Pablon said he couldn't believe how many people showed up to help repair his home.
"I didn't know there was going to be a whole platoon of people," he said. "Young guys coming around to help us out."
Pablon, a Vietnam veteran, suffered two strokes that forced him to retire early.
"I used to be able to do this by myself, but I am really not able to do it anymore ... It's just a huge help for us," he said.
The teenagers from Easterseals came ready to work on the home. They fixed up the yard, plumbing and basement.
"I go to school and I come here to work Youthbuild, and basically what we do is, we rehab houses and build different houses," Daelin Harris said.
Youthbuild manager Don Wittrock said the program helps its participants learn construction skills for careers after they earn their diplomas.
For Pablon, it was about more than just the house.
"It makes me happy to see young people doing this for others," he said.
