Summer is hot and humid.
Pregnancy turns awkward and uncomfortable the farther along you get. Sitting at 33 weeks pregnant and staring down 90-degree temperatures means I’m looking for any way to stay comfortable.
Many of you have reached out to see how I’m holding up (thank you!) and I can tell you all, I’m actually doing great! Here’s how I’m making it through:
Air Conditioning is My Friend
I’ve always considered myself an “indoor girl” during the summer months because I’ve never been a big fan of really hot weather. So when given the choice of going out or staying in this summer, it’s a no brainer.
I’ve been spending my time inside working on sewing projects, reading books to my daughter and going through all our baby stuff. You can see my most recent sewing project below: a quilt for my daughter. The only exception to staying in the air conditioning is when I’m in mommy mode and need to get outside but I’ve found a good way to get around that heat.
Up to My Chin
The pool may be a busy place, but it’s one I’m quick to embrace this summer.
If our daughter is in the mood to be outside, my go-to spot is our neighborhood pool. SPF 50, floppy hat, ice cold water and submerged up to my chin: All of these are essential for a good afternoon.
It feels awesome to be “weightless” in the water too! We recently went to the lake over the weekend and I found my favorite floating chair and just relaxed on the water ... with my feet up too! It was a great way to keep cool.
Staying in the Shade
If there’s no option but to be outside, I’m always in the shade. Did you know that your skin is more sensitive while pregnant and it even burns faster? For a woman of Irish descent, sunscreen is very important.
If I can’t find a shady spot, I’ll grab my big golf umbrella out of the car and create my own shade. Yes, it may make a few neighbors wonder if I’m waiting for rain, but it does the job!
I was pregnant over the summer when I had our daughter 5 years ago, so nothing about this summer has come as a surprise or shock. Thankfully I knew in advance how important it was to take it easy and let my body rest.
I can also say I’m very thankful for the support of my husband on hot days. He’s so sweet and makes sure that I’m doing okay and staying cool enough. And thank you to all of you who’ve stopped me in the store or written an email to see how I’m holding up in the heat!
