MASON, Ohio - Mason City Schools are mourning one of the district's high school students. Mary Scheeler, a junior, died Friday following a bicycling accident the previous night, according to school officials.
“Mary Scheeler had a gift for making her friends and family feel loved,” the school district tweeted Friday. “We will miss her dearly. Our hearts are with the Scheeler family and all who were lucky enough to know Mary.”
Mary, 18, was hit by a vehicle while riding her bike in the area of Mason Montgomery Road and Bethany Road, according to Mason police. Officers responded at approximately 7:50 p.m. Thursday, according to a police release.
Mary was transported to West Chester Hospital, then flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured, police said. The crash is under investigation.
Mary, who had Down syndrome, loved riding her bike, playing basketball, and Doc McStuffins, according to another school district tweet.
“She was wonderful at making her friends and family feel loved,” it said.
The school district's crisis team will be available for students on Monday, an official said.
Funeral arrangements are pending, according to the school district.
