FRANKLIN, Ohio - A West Carrollton officer accidentally shot himself in the leg at the Franklin police firing range Friday morning, the Journal-News reported.

The officer was at the range for an annual qualification when he shot himself while holstering his weapon, according to West Carrollton Deputy Police Chief David Wessling and Franklin police.

The officer, only identified as a veteran of at least 10 years, was transported to Kettering Medical Center in stable condition and is expected to be OK, according to police.

“He’s proficient, but sometimes incidents happen. This is an unfortunate event,” Wessling said.  West Carrollton police use the Franklin police range for standard qualifications that occur annually and biannually, Wessling said.

No other details were released.
