COLUMBUS — Ohio’s agriculture director disqualified one ride from operating at this year’s Ohio State Fair, citing corrosion found during an inspection. Four other rides have yet to open as they are still going through the inspection process.

Inspectors found the corrosion on Kissel’s Military Base on Wednesday shortly after it was assembled. The ride never operated at the fair.

“Safety is our number one priority,” said Ohio’s Director of Agriculture Dorothy Pelanda. “This is why we have the stringent inspection process that we do."

The ride recently visited a fair in Kentucky before it arrived at the Ohio State Fair on Tuesday. Officials said the ride would be disassembled Thursday night.

"The ride does not meet our standards and, therefore, will not operate at the Ohio State Fair,” Pelanda said.

The ride is not owned by Talley Amusements, the new state fair amusement company. It was subcontracted from Kentucky-based Kissel Amusement/Entertainment and was manufactured by Chance Rides.

In 2017, a ride collapse at the fair killed two people and injured several others. An investigation into the ride revealed there was a past history of structural fatigue and corrosion that may have contributed to the incident.
