FORT WRIGHT, Ky. -- Kristen Edwards was shocked when her landlord offered to send her family on a $250 Christmas shopping spree for the holidays.
"I was stressing about how we were going to do Christmas," Edwards said. "Now I know how it's going to get taken care of."
Jesse Brewer, the landlord in question, participates in a "Landlord Santa" program each winter and partners with other members of the rental industry to provide over $10,000 for 50 children every holiday season.
They select the recipient families based on the amount of need in their households.
"(We pick) good tenants, good families," Brewer said. "They pay their bills; they prioritize what's important. They just don't have money for the extra stuff."
For Edwards, it's a welcome relief at the end of the year.
"We are penny-to-penny the whole year long," she said. "Then, finally, Christmas comes and it's like, okay, penny-to-penny, we haven't saved up the whole year, so how are we going to do this?"
