ERLANGER, Ky. — Someone shot a man while he was riding in a car on Interstate 75 near Erlanger on Monday evening, according to Erlanger police.

Police said 42-year-old Steven Mains, of Florence, was with his family traveling southbound when they cut in front of another vehicle. They heard a loud bang and realized Mains had been shot in the leg.

The shooting is the second to happen on I-75 in just over a month. A Cincinnati man shot and killed 41-year-old John Patrick Abell on Oct. 9 near Fort Wright after Abell struck his car and approached him with a rifle drawn.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders said they would not press chargesagainst the shooter because he acted in self defense in the “road rage” incident.

Mains was treated and released from St. Elizabeth Hospital. Police said the suspect’s vehicle is a small passenger car with square headlights.

Anyone with information should call the Erlanger Police Department at 859-727-7599 or Detective Kyle Thornberry at 859-727-2920.
