PD: Suspect arrested after SWAT standoff in Covington

Posted

COVINGTON, Ky. -- A man was arrested after running from a traffic stop, which caused  an hours-long SWAT standoff Saturday evening, according to a news release from the Covington Police Department.

The incident started when police tried to make a traffic stop at about 3:11 p.m. on a car driven by 29-year-old Jared Derkson, Lt. Col. Brian Steffen said. Derkson fled on foot to his home, and an officer saw Derkson carrying what he believed was a handgun.

Derkson is on parole for a prior charge of assault by use of a handgun, Steffen said, so police obtained a search warrant and established a perimeter around his home at 1509 Clair St.

The SWAT team made a forced entry after they were unable to communicate with Derkson. The SWAT team found him hiding in his basement.

Derkson faces charges of fleeing/evading and various traffic violations, Steffen said. Police are still attempting to locate the gun.

The Kenton County SWAT Team assisted the Covington SWAT Unit at the scene.
