Covington teacher suspended for sending inappropriate messages through educational site

COVINGTON, Ky. -- Holmes High School social studies teacher Tyler Perkins was suspended Tuesday and transferred to another school for "inappropriate communications and/or conduct with a student," according to documents obtained from Covington Independent Public Schools.

Superintendent Alvin Garrison began investigating Perkins Dec. 27, 2017 and suspended him with pay as a result.

He concluded Tuesday Perkins had "exercised poor judgment in maintaining personal communications with a student through social media sites" and "engaged in conduct unbecoming a teacher."

Garrison announced Perkins would be suspended without pay for three days, transferred to another school and barred from coaching girls basketball for the remainder of the academic year, and be required to attend professional training focused on "maintaining professional relationships and communications with students."

According to Garrison's final letter, at least some of the inappropriate messages had been sent on Schoology, an educational site meant for completing, grading and discussing assignments.
