SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The COVID-19 pandemic has canceled a lot of events recently, but the Arlington Memorial Gardens plans to change things a little bit this year in order to continue to celebrate Memorial Day.
The big changes include the cancellation of the Friday evening concert and fireworks show, as well as the flag raising and Lunch with a Veteran program on Sunday. But the Field of Memories will still be on full display.
Volunteers showed up to the cemetery on Thursday to put up 1,000 American flags. The display is a tradition at the cemetery designed to honor all members of the U.S. armed forces, not just those who gave their lives.
"The one thing we've learned over the years doing this is how much our vets appreciate this," Lisa McClain, program and development coordinator for Arlington Memorial Gardens, said. "They have lost a lot of brothers and sisters during war and it's just very meaningful for them also."
Arlington Memorial Gardens opens at 8 a.m., and if you would like more information on the cemetery, you can visit their website here.
