SHARONVILLE, Ohio — The Hamilton man shot early Tuesday morning by a Sharonville police officer at a hotel there was on drugs and “hallucinating that the police are outside looking for him,” a daughter told police.
Duane R. Harrison, 53, of Hamilton, was armed when he was shot about two hours later, around 2:30 a.m., after a SWAT team arrived. An unidentified Sharonville officer confronted him and fired three shots, hitting him. Harrison later was listed in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Police after the shooting announced Harrison had been holding another adult daughter of his, other than the one who alerted the police, against her will at the Sonesta ES Suites at 2670 E. Kemper Road.
“He has a warrant for his arrest, which is why the police are looking for him, and he said he’s going to jump out the window, and he’s going to make her do the same thing,” his daughter told police. “He has guns with him, too. I don’t know what the result of all this is going to be.”
The daughter then began to cry.
Sharonville police said Harrison has a criminal history that includes felony drug possession. He also had an active felony warrant for probation violation from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
Sharonville Police Communications Supervisor Amy L. Williams said that following department policies, the officer involved with the shooting will be on desk duty until the sheriff’s criminal investigation, which automatically happens after a police-involved shooting, is completed. Sharonville also is conducting an administrative investigation, which also is standard procedure after such a shooting.
Sharonville police on their Facebook page said: “The subject barricaded himself in a room and the Hamilton County Police Association SWAT team was requested.” At about 2:30 a.m., “the subject left his room, armed with a black handgun, and was confronted by police in a common area. A Sharonville Police officer fired three rounds at the subject, striking him, and then took him into custody. A black handgun was recovered at the scene. No police officers or bystanders were injured during the events.”
Harrison is due to appear in court Thursday.
