'She's an independent woman'

A Forest Park woman celebrated her 105th birthday Wednesday.

Patty Jones's church, Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Woodlawn, hosted her birthday party. It was attended by more than 100 people, according to member Gina Moore.

"All for me? Oh boy," was Jones' reaction to the party.

Jones was born in Winchester, Kentucky. She lived in Wyoming with her late husband, Sonny, where they operated the Wyoming Golf Center for several years, Moore said.

Jones still drove herself around until two years ago, Moore said. Although she doesn't drive anymore, she still plays cards with her friends every Tuesday.

"She's an independent woman," Monica Hampton, Jones' cousin, said. "She still has a great mind and great sense of humor. I just wish I could copy her caramel icing cake recipe."

Woodlawn's mayor and police chief were present for Jones' birthday celebration.

When asked for the secret to a long life, Jones said "keep God on your side."
