COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A house fire in Colerain Township killed five puppies who were still inside late on Christmas night, fire officials said.

Crews responded to a report of a heavy fire at the 10200 block of October Drive in Northgate at 11:40 p.m.

No one else was injured in the blaze, and two adult dogs were rescued from the house.

Though crews quickly extinguished the flames, significant smoke and heat damage caused an estimated $25,000 in damage. The Cincinnati-Dayton Red Cross is working to find the residents a place to stay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
