CINCINNATI — To those who knew him, 13-year-old Izrael "Bunz" Bishop had limitless potential.
"(The world) lost a kid who could have done a lot of anything," said Rodney Christian, a self-described father figure to Izrael. "He (was) different than the other kids in some situations or tough situations."
That potential was cut short at 8:30 p.m. Thursday when police responded to a call of a reported unresponsive child lying on the ground on Dutch Colony Drive in Winton Hills. When officers arrived, they found Izreal, who had been shot.
Bishop was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Hear how Izrael's mentor describes, in his own words, the loss and its impact on the community:
"They're going to remember him as a leader," said Christian, who is also president of the East Westwood Community Council. "Bunz was a respectful kid. He seemed like he'd been here before. ... He was an old soul."
Cincinnati Public Schools tells us Bishop was a student at Hughes STEM High School.
A Cincinnati Public Schools spokesperson said in part, "We recognize this tragic event, and our sympathy and support remain with the family, friends and school community. Counselors will be on-site to provide continued support."
"All night, (I) was just tossing and turning and that was heavy," Christian said. "I felt like it was my son. It felt empty, like man, that was somebody who stayed up under me."
Christian said Izrael was a bright kid who was hungry to learn about life and just as eager to bring peace and help to his community.
Police have made no arrests in connection to the shooting.
Anyone with information is asked to call CPD's homicide unit at 513-352-3542.
