CINCINNATI — Residents should not be alarmed by the sound of gunfire in the Price Hill neighborhoods as Cincinnati police conduct live fire testing on July 8 for ShotSpotter.

City officials announced ShotSpotter would be installed in East Price Hill, West Price Hill and Lower Price Hill back in May.

"This technology has proven itself to be a vital part of our overall strategy to address violent crime," Police Chief Eliot Isaac said at the time the expansion was announced.

ShotSpotter detects gunshots using a network of acoustic sensors, according to Cincinnati police. The system can help police pinpoint the location of gunfire in less than 60 seconds even if no one calls 911.

Officers will be on site during the testing next Monday. No bullets will be fired into the air, according to a news release, and there’s no danger to anyone in the testing areas.

Exact locations for the testing will not be released.

Cincinnati police have responded to more than 900 ShotSpotter alerts since its implementation in Avondale in August 2017. Police said the number of shooting victims in the coverage area declined by 42% in the first year.

Police encourage all residents to report gunfire by calling 911, even after the installation of ShotSpotter.
