A falling tree knocked out power to 754 Mount Lookout homes Friday afternoon, Duke Energy confirmed.
A video recorded by viewer William Castle shows the moment it happened. According to Castle, an independent contractor was working to fell the tree at the corner of Lindell Lane and Kroger Avenue.
The tree tipped in the wrong direction — across the street and directly into the power lines, rather than into the empty yard where it had been supposed to fall.
The impact was immediate: Sparks, fire, a blocked street and more than 700 homes without electricity.
Duke Energy estimated power would be restored to most of the affected customers later Friday night.
