CINCINNATI — An 8-year-old child died from a gunshot wound Sunday afternoon, according to the Cincinnati Police Department.

District 5 officers responded to the 4800 block of Hawaiian Terrace in Mt. Airy Sunday afternoon and found Chance Gilbert with a fatal gunshot wound, according to CPD Captain Craig Gregoire.

"I don’t have any details of the investigation," said Gregoire. "This is unfolding. I want to say that our hearts and our prayers are out with the family. This was a very tragic day for all and we’re trying to get to the bottom of this."

The CPD homicide unit is currently investigating what happened, but police have not confirmed whether the shooting was intentional, nor have they identified any suspects or made any arrests, according to officers on the scene.

Chance Gilbert was a third-grade student at Riverview Elementary in Hamilton, according to the Journal-News.

Joni Copas, spokeswoman for Hamilton Schools, told the Journal-News the death of Gilbert has saddened the school system.

“The district is heartbroken over the sad news of the passing of Chance. We send our love and support to his family and hope they find peace and comfort during this difficult time,” said Copas.

“Even in his young life, he has left a mark with his vibrant personality and will be sorely missed by our school community.”

This is a developing story, WCPO will update as more information becomes available.
