CINCINNATI -- Metropolitan Sewer District Director Gerald Checco is retiring, and the city manager has picked an interim director to lead the agency.

City Manager Harry Black wrote in a memo to the mayor and city council that he was appointing Jerry Wilkerson as interim director of MSD effective Jan. 28.

Wilkerson began working for Greater Cincinnati Water Works in 1993. He has filled several positions in the city since then and has served as the MSD superintendent of administration since 2016, according to Black.

In the memo, Black also praised Checco, who he wrote plans to retire from MSD next month.

"During his current assignment, he has demonstrated a great deal of leadership acumen in steadfastly managing the agency through a period of transition and uncertainty given the approaching conclusion of the City's 1968 MSD agreement with Hamilton County," Black wrote.
