MARIEMONT, Ohio — Mariemont High School officials said Evan Barnes, a junior at the school, died Friday in a car crash.
"Evan was a kind and considerate young man who was a friend to many at the high school," wrote Principal Dr. James Renner in a message to families. "Our hearts go out to Evan’s family and to all of his friends, teachers, and classmates at this tremendously difficult time."
Renner said Barnes was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and that his family wants to "reiterate the importance of drivers and passengers wearing seat belts at all times."
"We are grateful to his family for still looking out for the safety of others during their time of loss," Renner said.
“It is a tremendously sad day for Mariemont City Schools” said Superintendent Steven Estepp. “My heart goes out to Evan’s family and friends as they cope with this tragic loss. I know that our students and staff will lean on each other in this difficult time as they fondly remember their classmate.”
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, school officials are making grief counseling available through email and Child Focus online therapists to give students the support they need around the clock.
