CINCINNATI -- Marjorie Parham, former publisher of the Cincinnati Herald, turns 100 Monday.
Parham is a jewel of the Queen City. She said she always knew what she didn't want to do.
"I did not want to be a school teacher," she said. "So, I dropped out."
Her husband, Gerald Porter, started the Cincinnati Herald. He was tragically killed in a car crash, leaving Parham to run the paper with her son.

She recalled it as: "Just a lot of work for a lot of years -- 30-something years."
Parham said she wanted the Herald to cover stories others ignored, from black social events and weddings to civil rights stories. She even went to Selma, Alabama, to cover voting rights efforts.
"I thought it was very, very relevant where black news was concerned," she said. "It was the most important thing going on at the time."
Over the years, Parham received numerous honors. She was also a regular on WCPO, appearing on several community affairs programs. She believes she created something lasting.
"I think we did," she said. "We tried."
