8-year-old collects donations, serves food to struggling families

CINCINNATI -- Eight-year-old Rebekka Talley rallied her friends and family to collect food and everyday supplies for poor and homeless families in Evanston.

She brought the donations Friday night to Christ Temple Baptist Church, where she and her parents helped workers serve food at a free dinner held just before the Friday evening service.

"I just want to see that everyone has a great life, and I'm here to help," she said.

Talley said she was inspired to help others after seeing a news report about poverty. The next time she went to Kroger with her mother, she asked if they could buy food for families in need nearby.

"I thought it was the perfect timing to help all these people that are poor in the world," she said. "And I had the power in me."

The Talley family purchased cereal, oatmeal and canned goods as well as toiletries, including soap, mouthwash and deodorant, to donate. They also posted on Facebook to solicit donations from their friends and extended family, who pitched in as well.

"It makes me feel happy," Talley said Friday night.
