CINCINNATI — New Year’s Eve will look much different at the Cincinnati Zoo this year.

Instead of a large countdown and fireworks display to ring in the new year, Cincinnati Zoo officials will put on a virtual countdown to discourage people from gathering in one spot.

Visitors will still be able to celebrate the new year at the PNC Festival of Lights. There just won’t be a countdown in a designated spot.

Cincinnati Zoo director Thane Maynard said anyone can enjoy the virtual countdown from anywhere in the world.

“Ring in the new year early with your kids or wait until midnight for the official start of the new year,” Maynard said. “Our virtual Happy Zoo Year features some of your favorite animals, including Fiona, and a fun look back at 2020. It wasn’t all bad!”

The zoo’s PNC Festival of Lights is open now through Jan. 3. Bonus nights to see the lights have been added on Jan. 8-10 and 15-17. Reservations are required.
