CINCINNATI -- One person died after a house fire early Sunday in the city's Carthage neighborhood.

Firefighters were called to the home on 65th Street just before 4 a.m. District Chief Warren Weems said the cold weather and hoarding-type conditions made their work more challenging.

A man and woman were inside. The man was pronounced dead at University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Weems said, despite paramedics' efforts to save him. The woman had burn injuries but her condition wasn't immediately available.

Neither person's name has been released.

"They were quiet people," neighbor Virginia King said. "They were friendly. They always talked to people."

Another neighbor, Cris Tomares-Cobedo, said the man was always outside with his dog.

"I was just like, wow, that fast a fire can start. That's how quick something can go wrong," Tomares-Cobedo said.
