Drugs suspected in Amelia crash that killed 2

AMELIA, Ohio -- Two people were killed in a crash on State Route 125 in Amelia Tuesday, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on 125 near Laub Road. Douglas Needles, 42, of Amelia, was driving a 2010 Mazda 6 eastbound while 55-year-old Douglas Hewitt of Estero, Florida, was driving a 2005 Ford Escape and a Cincinnati woman was driving a 2016 Audi Q3 westbound. Needles' car crossed into the westbound lanes and struck the two other vehicles, troopers said in a news release.

Needles and Hewitt were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers said the third driver was transported to Mercy Health - Anderson Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

Investigators suspect drugs were a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
