TRENTON, Ohio — Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones announced Monday that the Edgewood City Schools will welcome their very first K9.
Carmen, a 13-week-old labrador retreiver, will be handled by school resource officer Darian Bookman. Carmen is trained to smell gunpowder and narcotics, and began her first day assisting Bookman on Monday.
"Safety is our top priority and this effort is yet another way we are working to keep our students and staff safe," said Russ Fussnecker, Edgewood City Schools superintendent in a press release.
Carmen is the first K9 implemented in Edgewood City Schools and, according to Sheriff Jones, one of only a few used by school resource officers throughout the Tri-State.
