BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio — A New Miami firefighter, who was in "very bad shape" after he was involved in a head-on crash with a drunk driver last month, has been discharged from the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
According to the New Miami Fire Department, firefighter Dustin "Dusty" Cook was struck by a drunk driver on Aug. 22. The department said Cook had his spleen removed at Fort Hamilton Hospital and had been placed on a ventilator.
By Wednesday, Cook announced he was recovering with family.
"I just wanted to thank everyone for the support and prayers!" Cook wrote on the department's Facebook Wednesday. "I got discharged today at five and glad to be at my dads relaxing and healing now."
The New Miami Fire Department held a Fill The Boot fundraiser on Saturday, collecting donations on Rte. 127 in front of the firehouse and on Seven Mile Avenue and Augspurger Avenue.
"Thank you all for everything, I've been blessed," Cook wrote.
