MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — A judge set bond at $250,000 Friday for the man accused of stealing a car with two children in the back seat.

Dalvir Singh, 24, is charged with felonious assault, kidnapping and operating a vehicle without a license.

Surveillance video shows a man who police said was Singh stealing a 69-year-old woman's car outside the ER at Atrium Medical Center last week. The woman, Nita Coburn, was dragged by the Chevrolet Malibu while she tried to rescue her 8- and 10-year-old grandchildren, who were inside the car.

The children did manage to escape from the back seat of the car, police said.

Middletown Police Officer Connor Kirby arrested Singh a short time later.

Kirby detailed the incident during the preliminary hearing Friday. The hearing took nearly 90 minutes. Singh, who is originally from India, requested a Punjabi translator who assisted by phone. The judge had to stop him twice from talking out of turn.

Coburn said she had mixed feelings after seeing Singh up close in court.

"You're mad about what he did, and then you look at that person and you see him around, and they're sad people," she said. "But he shouldn't have done what he did."

If convicted, Singh faces as much as eight years behind bars.
