LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- West Chester Township officers’ search for a missing woman led them Friday to a body buried in a Liberty Township field.

The department could not confirm whether it was the body of Ellen Weik, a 23-year-old who disappeared from her West Chester home July 29. Police Chief Joel Herzog promised his officers would be "following up feverishly" throughout the night to search for additional evidence that could connect the body to Weik or to another crime.

According to Herzog, a tip led authorities to 6451 Millikin Road in Liberty Township, where a search involving helicopters, drones and officers on foot uncovered the body in a wooded area near the field. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Butler County Sheriff’s Office all assisted.

The BCI and Butler County Coroner will take over the task of identifying the body, Herzog said.

"We’re doing what we can to follow up," he said.
