Fireworks store recalls fireworks after Oxford child lost his hand

WEST COLLEGE CORNER, Ind. — After a 12-year-old Oxford boy lost a hand in a suspicious incident with a modified firework one night in March, the Oxford Police Department partnered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives to investigate.

Now, only one week before firework-laden Fourth of July festivities, Grandma's Fireworks has issued a recall of roughly 25,000 units of modified fireworks as a result of the investigation.

Oxford Police and the ATF believe the firework involved in the incident that cost 12-year-old Caleb Bogan his hand was a Talon rocket, sold at Grandma's Fireworks in West College Corner, Indiana -- just a 12 minute drive up State Route 27 from Oxford.

The recall states that "the recalled fireworks are overloaded with pyrotechnics intended to produce an audible effect, violating the federal regulatory standard for this product."

As a result of the modifications, the explosion from these fireworks can be much larger than anticipated, creating a risk of injury, according to the recall.

The firework exploded "very quickly" while Caleb was holding it, causing severe injuries, police said. The explosion cost Caleb his entire left hand, the index finger of his right hand, part of his chin and several teeth, his aunt, Holly Knapp, previously said. He was rushed to the hospital and required hours of surgery.

Lab results performed after the incident showed pyrotechnic residue on Caleb's jacket.

According to a press release sent out after the incident, "The boys discovered the firework in the alley and described it as silver colored and the shape and size of a baseball."

Alongside the Talon Rocket, several other types of modified fireworks have also been recalled for the same regulatory violations. People who have purchased any of these fireworks should return them to Grandma's Fireworks for a full refund.
