HEBRON, Ky. — A thief returned 25 stolen American flags to neighbors’ front yards late Wednesday night, just in time for the Fourth of July.
It was welcome news for Amy Walter, who organizes a display of 840 flags (all made in the United States) up and down the mile-long span of Treetop Lane every year. She plants many herself; others are the work of family members, neighbors and veteran volunteers. By the time they’re done, she said, the street is its own parade route.
“The neighbors, they'll stop; they'll honk,” she said. “They'll say 'Thank you.’ That's why we do it."
Seeing 25 stolen Wednesday morning made her heart sink, she added. She and her neighbors take the display seriously as a gesture of patriotism.
"It separates our neighborhood,” neighbor and Vietnam veteran Mike Moses said. “There aren't too many neighborhoods who do this anymore."
Seeing the flags returned Wednesday evening surprised her — but in a good way, she wrote on Facebook.
“Just received a call from my neighbor and quite honestly I am simply stunned!” she wrote. “They saw the person who took the flags putting them back. Truly at a loss of words!”
All’s well that ends well. Now — time for hot dogs.
