FLORENCE, Ky. -- A roof collapse trapped two firefighters inside a burning townhome Thursday afternoon, according to Florence Fire/EMS Department.

The firefighters were able to escape and climb out on a ladder. Crews transported both of them to St. Elizabeth Medical Center, and they were discharged several hours later.

Four firefighters reported minor injuries at the scene, according to Assistant Chief Scott Knoll.

Lightning started the fire in a two-story townhouse in the 1400 block of Taramore Drive, investigators said. The firefighters were trapped on the second floor while looking for residents who had been reported missing. Crews later found out the residents were not home at the time of the fire.

Extreme heat and humidity posed a challenge for firefighters, but they were able to contain the blaze to one unit.

At least one person was displaced. The American Red Cross was on scene to assist.
