CINCINNATI — All eight winners of the Scripps National Spelling Bee will get a custom-designed trophy of their own. First, Cincinnati’s Rookwood Pottery has to put in a little more work.
Director of Product Development Mary Guanciale says the company was prepared for three winners, “knowing that there has been a two-way tie in the past.”
But who could have prepared for the octo-champs?

“An eight-way tie is unprecedented,” Guanciale said, “and thus, we will be making additional trophies so that all eight winners can have a custom-designed piece to celebrate their milestone with a piece of art that is equally as grand as their accomplishment.”
Rookwood Pottery created the first custom Scripps Cup — meant to go home with the winner of the Bee. In a historic moment, eight spellers made it through every single round and all eight were named champions.
Guanciale designed the Cincinnati-made cup. The design honors nine decades of Scripps Spelling Bee history.
