COVINGTON, Ky. — An Edgewood woman accused of pretending to have cancer so she could pocket $10,000 in charity money pleaded not guilty to theft by deception Monday in Kenton County Circuit Court.

Jessica Krecskay, 25, was arrested Feb. 14 after her one-time supporters contacted police.

According to Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders, those supporters had noticed suspicious similarities to the case of Northern Kentucky University student Kelly Schmahl, who was publicly revealed to have faked a cancer diagnosis and benefiting from fundraisers meant to cover nonexistent medical costs.

If convicted, Krecskay could spend up to 10 years in prison.
