COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters on Wednesday announced the indictment of a suspect accused of shooting and killing a man near Northwest High School.

Brian Holmes Jr., 18, is charged with murder and felonious assault in the death of 25-year-old Rashad Shahid.

Holmes is accused of shooting Shahid and another person, a juvenile student at Northwest High School, on Nov. 21, Deters said. A juvenile co-defendant, who is also a student at the high school, faces a murder charge.

The two Northwest students had been in an ongoing conflict and decided to fight after school Thursday afternoon about a block away from the high school, according to Det. Mike Stockmeier.

The juvenile co-defendant had an on-going argument with the sister of the juvenile victim, Deters said. The co-defendant called Holmes for help, and Holmes started shooting before the fight started, Stockmeier said.

The juvenile co-defendant, juvenile victim and sister of the juvenile victim are all students at Northwest High School, Deters said.

The two victims, Shahid and an unnamed 17-year-old male, drove away after the shooting and were located a few miles away on Waycross Road in Springfield Township. Shahid, a Northwest grad, was pronounced dead. The other victim, who was shot in the arm, was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

If convicted, Holmes could face life in prison.

The juvenile co-defendant is scheduled to appear in Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas for a pretrial hearing at 9 a.m. on Dec. 5.
