Suspect in fatal Newport shooting surrenders, police say

CINCINNATI -- The man wanted in a fatal Newport, Kentucky, shooting last month turned himself in to Hamilton County authorities this week, police announced Wednesday.

Joshua Presswood, 25, is facing a charge of murder in the death of 24-year-old Jonathan Hayward.

Police said Presswood shot Hayward three times on Feb. 17 in a Lindsey Street home. First responders brought Hayward to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he died.

Presswood turned himself in at the Hamilton County Justice Center Monday, police said. Jail records indicated Presswood had not yet been extradited to Kentucky as of Wednesday afternoon.

Haywood's father, Jonathan Callery, previously told 9 On Your Side that his son was the kind of person who would help anyone.

"That boy would break his back for anybody,” Callery said. “He had a friend staying on the street, and he brought him here so he could not sleep in the cold or anything else."
