COVINGTON, Ky. — Esteban Portugues faced just one charge at the time of his May 10 arrest: Assault. Witnesses reported then that the machete-wielding Portugues had attacked a group of children, leaving a 9-year-old boy with a shoulder wound three inches deep.

Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders on Friday announced a new grand jury indictment for the 35-year-old: Attempted murder.

Portugues is being detained without bond by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement at the Kenton County Detention Center, although online records did not specify the immigration offense ICE believes he committed.

He will be arraigned Aug. 12 in Kenton County Court.
