NEWPORT, Ky. -- Police officers and K-9 units were looking for a man who shot and killed another man in a Newport home Saturday night, according to Police Chief Tom Collins.

The gunman shot John Hayward three times at about 10:30 p.m. in a home on Lindsey Street, Collins said. First responders took Hayward to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he later died.

Collins said Newport and Covington police officers were searching for the gunman in a half-mile radius from the home Saturday night.

Police aren’t sure what led up to the shooting, but Collins said it was not a random act of violence.

“Everyone is familiar with each other,” Collins said. “It’s not like people are just down here the wild west, running around, slinging guns and shooting. Obviously these people knew each other. It’s over something … it’s not like this is a random event, those are the ones that are really concerning. This doesn’t look like a random event.”

Collins encouraged Newport residents to call police if they see anything suspicious.

“You always want to tell people to lock the doors, be safe, and do whatever you have to do to protect yourself,” Collins said. “The big thing is if you see something say something ... you see somebody running out in the woods this evening where they shouldn’t be, you need to call 911 immediately and report it to the Newport Police Department.”
