Man sentenced to 20 years for smuggling drugs that killed Boone County inmate

COVINGTON, Ky. -- A judge sentenced an Independence man Friday to 25 years in federal prison for smuggling drugs that caused an inmate's fatal overdose.

Chad Prodoehl, 35, was an inmate at the Boone County Jail work camp in Burlington in 2016. Prodoehl conspired with other inmates to smuggle in drugs. He was permitted to leave the camp on work release, and he brought back drugs including the opioid carfentanil back to the camp and distributed them.

Fellow inmate Timothy Marcus overdosed on the drugs and died as a result.

Under federal law, Prodoehl must serve at least 85 percent of his prison sentence. After he's released, he will spend five years under the supervision of the United States Probation Office.
