Although officials at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport expect overall holiday travel rates to make up roughly 40% of normal holiday airport traffic, Monday is still expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year for the airport.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommended people avoid holiday travel this year. For those who decided to fly, CVG implemented precautions like mandatory masks and plexiglass barriers to keep travelers safer. Airport officials said they've also increased how often they clean and sanitize surfaces, and provide masks for free.
"Here, it's been really good here at CVG," said Rachel Bartel, who was leaving after seeing family in NKY. "You can tell people are trying to be attentive of it."
Overall, thousands walked through the gates at CVG on Sunday, either returning to the region from a trip or leaving to return home after visiting family.
"It was amazing," said Bartel. "My heart had a lot of joy. I was full of joy to see my grandchildren, because they are just adorable. They didn't know I was coming, so it was a surprise."
