Great sales for your Memorial Day BBQ

Big markdowns at Kroger, Meijer, Walmart

Abby Jones was stocking up for her Memorial Day barbecue at the Liberty Township Kroger.

"I'm going to do a barbecue chicken," she said.

She couldn't believe some of the bargains she found in the store. "Some good deals, like hot dogs buy one get  one free. Buns, buy one get one free."

And that's great news for shoppers. According to the USDA, the average price of ground beef is $3.73 a pound, up from $3.55 this time in 2017. Steak prices are up, too.

But Cincinnati area stores are all running great sales this weekend.

A lot of shoppers don't deal with paper anymore because they do everything on their phone.

But the easiest way to find this weekend's deals is to pick up the sale flier as soon as you walk into the store. You'll find some amazing deals right here.

Kroger's Memorial Day ad shows....

  •     Ribeye steak: $5.99 a pound, and ribs for $2.99 a pound.
  •     Kroger ice cream: $1.99 a tub.
  •     Kroger buns: 10 for 10 dollars.

At Meijer...

  •  Ground beef is $1.79 a pound.
  •  Fresh sweet corn: 8 ears for $1.

At  Walmart....

  •   Johnsonville brats: $3.67 a pack.
  •   Bush's baked beans $1.77.

But there are ways to save even more on that Memorial Day cookout, without looking cheap to your guests.

Substitute and save

The New York Post calls it "strategic substitution," For instance, chicken breasts with bones are about half the price of boneless breast. Chicken thighs are even cheaper.

In place of pricey cuts of steak, marinate a flank or sirloin steak.

And put it all on Kroger's patriotic  paper plates, just $1 each through Memorial Day.

That way you don't waste your money
