CINCINNATI -- The low gas prices that drivers in southern states have been enjoying for weeks are finally arriving in the Cincinnati area.
Stations in Fairfield and Hamilton are slashing prices, dropping as low as $1.85 at some stations.
GasBuddy.comreports the Kroger on Route 4 in Hamilton is now $1.85, as is the UDF on Pleasant and Nilles in Fairfield.
Other Butler County stations are falling to $1.95 to $1.97 range.
9 On Your Side price spotter Ron McKiddey says he was stunned to see the Kroger near his Fairfield home drop from $2.05 to $1.85 overnight. Bob Apke, another 9 On Your Side gas price spotter, said he has "never seen such a sharp one-day drop" before.
Typically prices jump 25 cents in one day, but drop in just small increments.
Why the Price Drop?
According to GasBuddy.com, the average Cincinnati price is now $2.25 a gallon, which is lower than the national average of $2.37.
What caused this good fortune for drivers? Two things:
1. Refinery problems have ended. Prices locally have been above the national average since a BP refinery near Chicago shut down in early August. However, that refinery is now up to speed, and gasoline supplies are plentiful for the first time in 2 months.
2. Labor Day is over, which means peak summer driving season has ended. Prices are falling all across the country, due to low oil prices, good gasoline supply, and reduced demand from drivers.
More Money in Your Wallet
Small business owners like tree trimmer Russel Iles are especially enjoying the savings. "It's really good, because I use a lot of gas every day," he told us last week, while filling up on $1.99 gas in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
Until now, you had to drive to Lawrenceburg, Versailles, or Aurora IN to find gas under $2. Now it is starting to spread to the Cincinnati metro area, meaning more money in your wallet every week.
As always, don't waste your money.
